 Great value cargo box December 17, 2008
We needed the extra space for a recent family trip and spent siginificant time researching various options for cargo boxes. The SportRack cargo box was about $100 less expensive than an equivalent sized Thule box, and it worked just fine.
It was easy to mount and secure. The additional noise and gas milage impact was minimal. It rained pretty heavily during the trip and we were a bit worried, but everything stayed bone dry. The only drawback is that if you mount to an SUV, you probably won't be able to fit in your garage. But other than that, I highly recommend this product if you are in the market for a cargo box.
A Good Choice! December 16, 2008
Our unit came without instructions (hence the 4 stars, not 5). Otherwise, we are extremely happy with our purchase and believe that it is a good value. I made the mistake of not referencing the manufacturer's website before purchasing to see if it would fit our Saturn Vue. It doesn't (technically), however my husband was able to make it fit by drilling two new holes adjacent to the pre-drilled holes near the front. We drove with it for over 1000 miles at 70+ mph speeds. We did not notice much difference in vehicle handling for the first 500 miles. The last 500 miles was in a snow storm with ~40 mile per hour winds. The vehicle was a little tough to handle, but it would most likely have been tough even without the cargo box on top. Only a minor amount of moisture entered the very front of the unit during the storm. Our laundry bag absorbed all of the wee bit that did get in, which was frozen solid anyway.
 Gets the job done November 12, 2008
Bought this rack for a move across the country from Pennsylvania to Colorado. It got the job done with no issues. Didn't have any weather, so I can't witness to it's water-tighteness, but the way the top fits to the bottom I have little doubt there would be any issues. Wind noise was noticeable and mileage suffered, but I think that has more to do with the 40mph headwind we drove into across all of Kansas. I would buy this again and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a cost-effective alternative to the Yakima or Thule carrier.
Great extra storage space! November 4, 2008
I have a Mercury Mariner and this carrier fits perfectly, although it is a little tricky to get the bolts in. We needed extra cargo space as we travel with two large dogs that pretty much take up the back area of the Mariner and this is great because we can stow all our luggage and the dogs have plenty of room. I did not notice any difference traveling on the highway and it is easy to load and unload. Be careful when you have it on the vehicle it will not fit in a standard garage.
Survived Hurricane Dolly! October 3, 2008
I purchased this carrier for a family vacation to South Padre Island, we got trapped on the island during Hurricane Dolly and this carrier actually stayed on top of our car with zero damage. It withstood 100 mph winds in an inprotected parking lot! It was easy to place on top of the car was roomy enough for our family of 4 and all our big beach items.
